Ig Nobel Prizes

Did you know there's a spoof on the Nobel prizes - the Ig Nobel prizes? These are also awarded each year to ... "honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think" and to spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology.

On page 76 of English Network Plus you can read about an Ig Nobel prize-winner, Eduardo Segura, of Lavakan de Aste, of Tarragona, Spain, who won the Ig Nobel Prize in Hygiene for his invention of a washing machine for cats and dogs!

The Ig Nobel Prizes are presented by genuine Nobel laureates at a ceremony in Sanders Theater at Harvard University. The IgNoble ceremony has many of its own traditions, including an eight-year-old girl who interrupts long-winded speakers by repeating, "Please stop. I'm bored," in a high-pitched voice if speakers go on for too long. Throwing paper aeroplanes was another long-standing tradition - and the paper planes on the stage were swept up by physics professor Roy Glauber, who was given the title: Keeper of the Broom. But Professor Glauber couldn't perform his sweeping duties in 2003 - he was travelling to Stockholm to receive a genuine Nobel Prize in Physics!
