Teaching tip: 'Network Now' postcards ('Historic pillar boxes', 'Lake District')

Last month we gave you some ideas on what to do with the first two postcards from the set of 12 which you received from Langenscheidt. This month we'll look at the next two – red post boxes (postcard 3) and the Lake District (postcard 4). Click here to read more …

We all love using authentic material in the classroom to make the link between our lessons and the outside world. With this in mind here are some 5-minute filler ideas using the postcards which show the post boxes from the Royal Mail depot and a view of the Lake District.

Postcard 3: Historic pillar boxes

Do these two games after your students have looked at the Language and culture page in Unit 2 of Network Now Starter. You might like to bring in prizes for the winners!

Quiz: What am I?

- Write on the board: What am I?
- Say the following sentences slowly to your students until they guess that you are a post box:

I'm red.
I'm in the street.
I'm in England, Scotland and Wales.
I'm for postcards.
I have the Queen's name.

The British Postal Museum

- Print out the following visiting times:

Visiting the British Postal Museum
Monday to Wednesday: 10.00am - 5.00pm
Thursday: 10.00am - 7.00pm
Friday: 10.00am - 5.00pm

- To print out a little map showing where The British Postal Museum is located just click here:

- Put the students into pairs and give both, the visiting times and a map, to each pair.
- Write these questions on the board:

Is it open on Saturday? (answer: no)
Is it open on Monday? (answer: yes)
Is it open at lunchtime? (answer: yes)
Where is it? (answer: Phoenix Place)

- Students work in their pairs to find the answers.

Postcard 4: The Lake District

Describing

- Write the following words on the board: nice, clean, dirty, city, big, red, yellow, blue, beautiful, small, green, people, nature, relaxing, walking, swimming.
- Show your students the postcard and ask them to choose the words which fit the photo.

Quiz: All I know about the Lake District

- Show your students the postcard.
- Put them into pairs. Each pair collects as many details about the Lake District as possible. (This can best be done after Magazine 1 of Network Now Starter.)

Don't forget, if you have ideas you would like to share, write them in the 'Kommentarfeld' at the end of this Teaching tip and send them in.
